Drogheda United 3-0
Cork City.
Cork City bowed out of the EA Sports Cup, after a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to the holders Drogheda United.
City made 5 changes to the team who were beaten by UCD. Kevin Burns, Ian Turner, Denis Behan, Adam Rundle and Kalen Spillane all coming in.
It was a cagey start to the game, with the home side having the better of it, but City’s first chance came on 7 minutes, when Rundle played in Kavanagh with an excellent ball, but the striker dawdled on the ball, allowing a Drogheda defender to recover.
Kalen Spillane then stung the hands of Michael Schlingermann with a free kick from 25 yards.
That seemed to wake Drogheda up, and on 14 minutes Darren Dennehy was to thank for denying Paul O’Conor a shot. Two minutes later and David Cassidy’s cross flashed across the face of goal, but luckily for the Rebel Army, no one was there to capitalize.
On 23 minutes Darren Dennehy was subbed with a foot injury, allowing John Kavanagh to make his senior debut. Three minutes later and Drogs had the lead
Jason Marks picked the ball up 30 yards out from goal, and curled a shot around Kevin Burns and into the net.
From then on, City struggled to break down the home team’s defence, Derek Prendergast playing well to keep Daryl Kavanagh quiet. It could’ve been two on 41 minutes, when the Brennan’s combined, with Ryan laying off to Gavin whose shot fizzed over the bar.
Then in the 44th minute, it was 2-0. O’Conor won a corner, from which Ryan Brennan nodded back across goal to Prendergast. The defender’s shot deflected off 3 players, and up for Alan McNally to nod in off the bar from 2 yards out.
Before the Leesiders had time to recover, they found themselves 3-0 down. Paul O’Conor found space down the right wing, his attempted cross striking Danny Murphy on the arm. Referee Paul Tuite pointed to the spot, and Ryan Brennan fired the penalty into the bottom corner, just out of reach of Burns.
Halftime: Drogheda United 3-0 Cork City
The second half started brighter for City, Daryl Kavanagh blazing over a minute after the re-start, and then shooting low at Schlingermann on 50 minutes. Shane Duggan then struck over 3 minutes later.
Rob Lehane came on for Denis Behan on 58 minutes, but Drogheda could’ve made it 4 soon after, when Michael Daly’s cross went to Gary O’Neill, who volleyed into the ground, which allowed Buckley to clear.
From then on, the game petered out, with Drogheda happy to pass around the Rebel Army. With 11 minutes to play, Cassidy curled a shot just over. Sub Fabio O’Brien then rounded Burns and shot goalwards, only for Buckley to get back to clear off the line. And Drogheda had one final chance, when Ryan Brennan tried to chip Burns, who got a big right paw up to clear.
Next up for Cork City is the visit of Sligo Rovers on Friday night, live on Setanta Ireland. Whereas Drogheda will face Malmo on Thursday in their Europa League Round 1 Qualifier
